When to Use SRT vs VTT

Use VTT when you need web-native subtitles for HTML5 video elements, or when you want to add styling like colors and positioning to your captions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between SRT and VTT?
SRT (SubRip) is the most widely supported subtitle format, used by most video players and platforms. VTT (WebVTT) is the web standard, used in HTML5 video and supported by YouTube, Vimeo, and modern browsers. VTT also supports styling options that SRT doesn't.
Can I import existing text to generate subtitles?
Yes. Click the Import Text button, paste your text with one subtitle per line, and the tool will automatically generate timestamps based on text length. You can then fine-tune the timing manually.
How does auto-timing work for imported text?
When you import text, the tool estimates display duration based on text length (roughly 15 characters per second), with a minimum of 2 seconds and maximum of 7 seconds per subtitle. A small gap is added between subtitles.
Can I reorder subtitles?
Yes. Use the up and down arrow buttons on each subtitle to change the order. Subtitle numbers are automatically updated when you reorder.
Is there a limit on the number of subtitles?
There's no hard limit. You can add as many subtitles as you need. The editor scrolls to accommodate long subtitle lists.
Are my subtitles stored anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your subtitle content is never sent to any server. Download your file before closing the page.
